Dermaplaning is a quick and effective deep exfoliation procedure that can lift away dull skin revealing a dewy and youthful complexion, and since it requires nothing more than a surgical grade dermaplaning razor, it’s much more affordable than other skin rejuvenation methods.
Dermaplaning can be done as a standalone procedure or added on to the beginning of any of our facials including hydrafacial for better exfoliation and to encourage increased absorption of product. When done as a standalone treatment it takes around 30 minutes to complete. The process is completely pain-free and there is no downtime.
What Happens During a Dermaplaning Session?
After thoroughly cleansing your skin of excess oil, dirt and bacteria, your esthetician will use a surgical-grade scalpel and precise strokes to gently but thoroughly scrape away the uppermost layer of dead skin cells on your face and neck. The result is a deep and chemical-free exfoliation. If your dermaplane is an add-on treatment, your esthetician will then continue with your facial, otherwise, they will simply finish with a moisturizer and sunscreen.
Since the procedure involves the manual use of a sharp razor, it also removes the thin fine vellus hair on your face, sometimes known as “peach fuzz” in the process. While vellus hair is almost imperceptible, it does create a mild dulling or mattifying effect on the skin. Removing it instantly brightens your complexion.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
In addition to removing dead dry skin, brightening your complexion and revealing a healthy glow, the absence of vellus hair means your makeup, should you even feel you still need it, will glide on easily and flawlessly.
Since dermaplaning causes tiny microscopic tears, the skin responds by stimulating certain growth factors which in turn, encourage the growth of collagen. With regular treatments, your skin cells begin to turnover much faster leaving you looking youthful and refreshed.
Dermaplaning wont expressly help with acne but it can remove the top layer of blemishes and dead skin from pores so that blackheads and some whiteheads are easier to remove with extraction tools. Regular removal of the dead epidermis layer may help keep pores clear and prevent future breakouts.
Side Effects and Contraindications
When done by a professional, there are no side effects to dermaplaning. You might see some redness right after, but it should disappear within an hour or two.
Dermaplaning may not be for those with extremely sensitive or inflamed skin, or those who have used accutane in the previous 6 months. It may also be contraindicated if you have rosacea, open wounds, or an allergy to nickel. Talk to one of our skincare experts to find out if dermaplaning is right for you.
Before the Treatment
At least five to seven days before your dermaplaning treatment, you should stop using all exfoliants. Stay away from AHAs, BHAs, microbeads, retinoids, and enzymes because they can thin your skin.
You should also avoid waxing, sugaring shaving, or threading your face and neck for at least two weeks before your appointment. If your skin is actively experiencing a breakout, it may be better to reschedule. Please don’t hesitate to call us if you aren’t sure.
Following your dermaplane procedure you should be vigilant about wearing sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure for the next 48 to 72 hours. You should also stop using enzyme based products, retinoids, and exfoliants in your skincare routine for the next week.
What to Expect After Dermaplaning
After your treatment you’ll notice that your skin looks and feels fresher and brighter. Within a few weeks, you’ll notice that your vellus hairs are growing back. This happens at different rates for different people. To maintain results, many clients like to repeat the
